Deal, follow, resolve

  1. The first deal distributes a shuffled 52-card deck across four seats, 13 per seat. The ace-of-spades holder leads with any card.
  2. The first card sets the lead suit. A follower with that suit must play it. A follower with none can play any card and cuts the trick immediately.
  3. With no cut, discard the trick. The highest card of the lead suit wins and its player leads again if still active. Otherwise the next seat with cards leads.
  4. On a cut, the highest lead-suit player takes all cards already on the table and leads again. Seats that have yet to act keep their cards.

Compare two tables

All players follow hearts

Arun’s king is the highest heart. Discard all four cards. Arun leads if he still has a card.

Meera is out of hearts

The spade cuts. Ravi picks up these three cards, even if the jack was his last. Arun never plays into this trick. If the spade was Meera’s last card, she escapes.

Practice reading a trick

Use the two tables above. Each exercise also has a text explanation.

Read the explanation

The king outranks the jack, six and four.

Read the explanation

A cut resolves the trick immediately, before later seats play.

Read the explanation

Ravi takes all three and leads the next trick if the round continues.

Escape and elimination

An empty hand counts after resolution. The first escape earns one round score point. Once only one player has cards, that player is eliminated. Remaining seats are dealt again until one tournament winner remains. If the ace of spades is undealt in a later round, the first active seat opens.

Decisions worth practicing

With a jack of hearts already down, choosing a six over a king keeps you below the current high card. If someone later cuts, you avoid taking the pile. Remember which suits a player has cut, then revise that read after a pickup or a new deal.

FAQ

Does a spade beat a heart?

Kazhutha has no trump. A spade on a heart lead can cause a cut but cannot be the highest heart.

Must the opening player use the ace of spades?

The ace selects the opener. The opener may choose a different card.
